Neurotoxins

Neurotoxins are purified proteins produced from the Clostridium Botulinum bacteria.  One of the most commonly used toxin is called Botox, along with similar toxins such as Dysport and Juveau. Neurotoxins have been widely used for wrinkle treatment since the early 1990’s with no serious side effects documented.

Areas commonly treated with neurotoxins include:

  • Frown lines
  • Laugh lines
  • Forehead wrinkles
  • Gummy Smile
  • Temporary Brow Lift
  • Temporary Lip Lift

New uses for neurotoxin include reduction in sweating of hands and armpits (hyperhydrosis) and relief of headaches.

BOTOX®

Botox® is a naturally-occurring protein produced by the bacteria Botulinum toxin type A. Botox® utilizes this bacteria for medicinal use, purifying it into a  low-concentration form of the bacterial toxin. When injected in small doses, Botox® can safely and temporarily relax muscles by blocking the chemical signals that cause them to contract. By preventing these muscles from contracting and tightening, the skin will appear flatter, smoother and less wrinkled overall.

Botox® has a long safety record, as it has been used as a medical product for decades before its more recent use as a cosmetic treatment (distinctly Botox® Cosmetic) . More recently, Botox continues to be used for concerns such as chronic migraines and hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating).

Visible results of Botox® Cosmetic treatments for our patients are typically noted around 5 to 7 days post injection but the average patient will report full visible results around 10 days. It may take up to two weeks for Botox® to fully take effect. We often suggest a follow-up visit at that time if need be. Botox® is FDA approved for the glabellar (between the brows or the 11’s) as well as the crow’s feet area (around the eyes).

Botox® is an exceptional product for its effectiveness, variety and trustworthiness. Choosing the right physician to inject you is key to the success and durability of the treatment. At Swissa Med Spa, we pride ourselves in providing patients with top-rated master injectors who have undergone extensive training in order to provide patients with proper care and beautiful results. We are confident in our ability to deliver beautiful and natural Botox® Cosmetic treatment results to all our Swissa Med Spa patients.

Dysport®

Dysport® is an injection containing abobotulinumtoxinA (Botulinum toxin type A). Treating various areas of the face safely via a small needle, Dysport® can help prevent wrinkles by causing a temporary reduction in muscle activity. Visible results are reported to happen as early as 3 days post injection but the average patient will report full visible results after 10 days. Dysport® was FDA approved in 2009 for aesthetic use for glabellar lines (frown lines) but like Botox®, Dysport® is widely used for other areas of the face in addition to its medical purposes. These areas include the forehead and the crow’s feet.

We are often asked what the difference is between Dysport® and Botox®. Most commonly, the two fall under the same neurotoxin umbrella. However, what mainly differentiates the two is that Dysport® has its own unique metric, causing the measurement (i.e., “unit” count) to differ. This ultimately causes a different unit ratio when injecting Dysport® (3 units of Dysport® for 1 Botox®).

Some physicians will agree that Dysport® is preferred among some patients for the crow’s feet area due to its diffusion into muscles creating a very natural, movement friendly environment. Lastly, Dysport® is slightly cheaper than other neuromodulators on the cosmetic market. Dysport® is gradually earning its spotlight once patients have experienced it for themselves.

Real facts about Dysport®

  • Last about 3 months
  • Works as early as three days
  • Provides a “soft look”
  • We recommend not lying down for 4 hours or exercising for 24 hours post injection just as a precautionary measure
  • The treatment only takes a few minutes (not including pre-procedure numbing)
  • Pain free without down time
  • You should discontinue any type of blood thinning product a few days prior to your appointment (i.e., Ibuprofen, Excedrin, Aspirin, Aleve, Vitamin E, Fish oil, etc).
  • Try to avoid alcohol for 3 days prior to injections

Jeuveau®

Jeuveau® (aka “NewTox”) is the latest neurotoxin injection containing prabotulinumtoxinA. Treating various areas of the face safely via a small needle, Jeuveau® temporarily relaxes the small muscle groups that cause dynamic wrinkles (i.e., glabellar lines/frown lines, crow’s feet, etc.). When this compound is injected into muscle tissue, it blocks nerve signals so that the brain can no longer instruct treated muscles to move. Visible results are reported to happen as early as 3 days post injection but the average patient will report full visible results after 7-10 days. Jeuveau® was FDA approved in 2019 for aesthetic use for glabellar lines (frown lines).

We are often asked what the difference is between Dysport®, BOTOX® and Jeuveau®. The three all fall under the same neurotoxin umbrella. However, what mainly sets Jeuveau® apart from Dysport® and Botox® is that it uses a slightly different form of botulinum toxin than BOTOX® and Dysport® , which use onabotulinumtoxinA. Jeuveau contains prabotulinumtoxinA. According to clinical trials, both compounds share a similar safety profile and are equally effective for treating dynamic wrinkles.

Additionally, Jeuveau is less expensive than either BOTOX® and Dysport® even though it creates very similar results.
